When to go

Bhutan through the seasons

Every season has its own beauty. Spring and autumn are the most popular; summer and winter are quieter.

March – May

Spring

Rhododendrons in bloom, warm days and the Paro Tshechu.

June – August

Summer

Monsoon rains, lush green valleys and fewer visitors.

September – November

Autumn

Clear skies and mountain views, the Thimphu Tshechu and our hometown Tamshing Phala Choepa.

December – February

Winter

Crisp, sunny days, cold nights and black-necked cranes in Phobjikha.

Practical tips

Before you travel

Getting there

  • Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines fly into Paro from Bangkok, Delhi, Kathmandu, Singapore and other cities
  • You can also enter overland from India via Phuentsholing
  • We help book your flights and meet you on arrival

What to pack & wear

  • Layers for warm days and cool evenings
  • Comfortable walking shoes for hikes such as Tiger's Nest
  • Modest clothing for dzongs and temples: long sleeves and long trousers or skirts
  • Sun protection, plus a rain jacket in summer

Local etiquette

  • Walk clockwise around chortens, temples and prayer wheels
  • Remove hats inside dzongs and temples
  • Photography is not allowed inside most temples; ask before photographing people
  • Accept gifts and offerings with both hands as a sign of respect

Money & staying connected

  • The ngultrum is pegged to the Indian rupee
  • ATMs in main towns and cards at larger hotels; carry cash for villages, crafts and tips
  • Your tour is paid in advance, so day-to-day spending is small
  • Wi-Fi in most hotels, and we can help you buy a local SIM card on arrival
